Gift for Magmaarcher by Ryanide Gift for Magmaarcher by Ryanide
Well asked me to draw a picture that represents how he was feeling a while ago, so here's what I came up with.

Since Magmaarcher doesn't have a persona of any kind yet, I just drew some random spirit girls. Ain't they pretty? :3

Anyway, the dark substance represents the way magmaarcher seemed to "clothe" himself in depression by continuously telling himself that he wasn't the sort of person to be happy, and that he was lost.

And yet, being happy is naturally a better and healthier state of mind than depression. Underneath all that depression, the potential for a shining ball of light is always there. And you'll never join the other balls of light if you keep yours wrapped up in black stuff.

Also, friends and family will try to help you. They want you to have a better life, and will try to urge you to shed your depression.

It's like...a sort of restraint. You feel you WANT to enjoy yourself and enjoy life, but at the same time, you're restraining yourself with depression. It's almost as if you're being fashionably depressed. Or holding a grudge.

ANYWAY, NUFF OF THAT, THIS WAS DONE IN FLASH, NO PHOTOSHOP WAS USED EXCEPT TO SAVE THE PNG FILE.

(C) Ryanide 2006, do not distribute or steal.

*I'm actually really happy with the way this turned out...it feels deeper than most of the stuff I normally do, and it's not exactly emo either.*

Oh, don't use Photoshop at all! Flash can handle the whole PNG business!

Good style, good shading and pseudo-3D, and fialy, good color scheme!

Strange to see the charcters staring at each other, emotionless, though.

Well there are definately some things that are very hard to do in Flash. Lighting effects and such, as well as complex gradient shading is next to impossible. In Photoshop, however, they have all sorts of modes and brushes to make it much easier.

I like how you wrapped the body up with the blackness, the eye expressions between the two tell the whole story.

Your art teacher is a bit of a snob but that's putting it mildly... I never really did like art teachers a few have actually helped me in recent years with some things but they weren't the ones that were tied to my school days.

Wow!
It does have a lot of depth, even though it lacks tons upon tons of little minute details (which works with this pic). You've captured the emotion quite well, it sounds like something I've been going through for awhile... and the expressions came out good.

what tons upoon tones of little minute details were you talking about? It's a simplistic style, I can't think of many tiny details that could have been added.

just the paint brush. You just draw the outlines to the shading and then use the paint bucket to fill them in. That's how cellshading works.

Very nice. The description really made this image work.
Your flash skills be 1337, but to me, the meaning and message behind the image is so much more important and powerful than the image itís self.
Wonderful work, really powerful. :+fav:

i'm pretty much depressed all the time. but in my case, my mom is pretty much pushing me towards it, and that frusterates me. she's arrogant and stubborn, and i'm the one she basically throws her shit at. i'm sick of it.

but good picture, by the way.

Pah, my art teachers hate my concepts. They say I don't have any idea what's going on in the real art world, and that the stuff I draw is "kitsch" not art.

Fine by me, I just want to draw things that tickle the imagination, not say volumes about the declining state of humanity.

Me too. One is so depressing I can barely stand to be around her, and the other one is an installation work freak who says you don't classify as an artist until you've got your work published in a gallery and recognised by "contemporary art critics"

Many of my favourite artists are not professional, but I can't research these artists for my projects because my teacher says they're not recognised and are therefore not artists.

She can't tell me that and are not artists. Some of their work is deeper and WAY more appealing than the stuff I see in the art magazines she reads.

Luckilly, we also have a cool art teacher who's into comics and manga. You should see them argue!
